The Keys to a Great Framework

If you're trying to teach a big concept, sell a service, or scale your message, you need a framework.

But not just any framework.

Not the kind that crams every idea you've ever had into one diagram.
Not one that’s pretty but confusing.

You need one that works.
This insight comes straight from a conversation with Mel Abraham, one of the best in the business when it comes to frameworks that create real impact.

First, Know What a Framework Is For

A framework isn’t just a diagram.
It’s a tool for thinking and decision-making.

A great framework helps your members or clients:

  • Understand your method

  • See their path

  • Remember what to do

  • Take the next step with confidence

It helps you sell, teach, and lead more effectively.

The 4 Elements of a Powerful Framework

Mel breaks it down into four clear components:

1. Formation (Shape)

Choose shapes with intention:

  • Squares = structure and safety

  • Circles = inclusion and community

  • Triangles = movement and direction

Each shape triggers a different psychological response.
Your choice should match the emotion or energy you want to create.

2. Information (Content)

Keep it simple.

Mel uses the “3-hour coffee test”:

“If you had just three hours with someone and would never see them again, what are the 3 to 5 things they must know to move forward?”

The goal is a micro-success, not a brain dump.
Focus on what gets them from point A to point B.

3. Emotion (Feeling)

Ask yourself:
What emotion should this framework create?

  • Urgency?

  • Hope?

  • Aspiration?

  • Clarity?

Emotion is what drives action and connection.
Bake it into both the design and delivery.

4. Orchestration (Delivery)

Do not drop the full framework on the screen at once.

That’s a fast way to lose your audience.

Instead, build it live or reveal it step-by-step.
This keeps focus on the part you are teaching and helps the message land.

Cute Doesn’t Sell. Clarity Does.

Mel said it best:

“Cute doesn’t sell. I want effective.”

Brand colors are great.
But sometimes you need red, yellow, or green for clarity and impact.
Choose function over flair when it counts.

Why This Matters for Retention

When your framework is clear and compelling, people believe in it.
That belief drives trust, action, and results.

And results drive retention.

This supports the Progress and Path of the Progress Wheel
And builds Recognition and Results in the Retention Accelerator Framework

Your Framework Checklist

Before finalizing your next framework, ask:

  • Does the shape match the emotion I want to create?

  • Did I narrow the content to just what they need right now?

  • Is there a clear emotional message?

  • Am I revealing it in a way that supports focus and clarity?

If not, you have room to refine.
