Creating Boundaries Around Your Big Why

Most membership founders start with one goal: time freedom.

But somewhere along the way, financial goals take over. Time freedom fades, and burnout sets in. That’s not success. That’s a trap.

This episode with Dayna Abraham is a wake-up call to design your business on purpose, not just for profit.

Here’s how to get back to what matters.

Know Your Real Goal

You can’t prioritize everything. One goal will always lead.

Most entrepreneurs default to money goals, not because they want to, but because they never define anything else.

Here’s what to do instead:

  • Choose time freedom on purpose

  • Define what that looks like in your daily life

  • Get real about what you need to earn (your “enough” number)

That number changes everything. It tells you when to stop, not just when to grow.

Set Your Non-Negotiables

Boundaries aren’t about saying no. They’re about knowing what gets a hell yes.

Before you build your next offer, ask:

  • What are my non-negotiables?

  • How do I protect time with my kids, my partner, or myself?

  • Will this business model support that?

Without this, you’ll build something that pulls you away from everything you were trying to create.

Build With Simplicity In Mind

Complicated systems don’t create freedom. Clear constraints do.

Dayna uses these three filters on every project:

  • Is it simple?

  • Is it fun?

  • Does it help people?

If the answer is no, it’s not worth it.

That includes launches, client work, community events—everything. Create your own filters so you can design with intention, not obligation.

Your Big Why Isn’t Just About Business

Dana breaks it down like this:

  • Big Why for Your Family

  • Big Why for Your Dream

You need both. And both need numbers and boundaries.

This isn’t about soft goals. It’s about structure, margin, and sustainability. That’s what drives long-term retention, not just short-term wins.

The Retention Lesson

When your business honors your time, your people feel it.

  • Your community doesn’t feel hustle energy.

  • Your members experience presence, not pressure.

  • Your systems serve them, not just your sales.

This is how you build something you actually want to keep showing up for.
